About Trancoso
October 17, 2006Brazil is known the world over for the beaches of Rio and the excitement of Carnival, but when Brazilians travel they head for the golden sands and emerald seas of Trancoso, Bahia, Brazil. Easily accessible by air and approximately 800 kilometers south of Salvador, the beauty of Trancoso’s beaches is known throughout Brazil.
One of the earliest settlements founded by the Portuguese in Brazil (1586), Trancoso is a village of incredible natural beauty. Its ideal year round climate coupled with the intimacy and privacy of a small village offer the perfect escape for those seeking privacy, exotic location and the best beaches in Brazil. Below the cliffs of the village you will find many kilometers of unspoiled white sand beaches bordered to the north and south by rivers flowing into the sea. Here you will find large sand dunes and small natural pools for swimming and relaxing by the sea.
Trancoso’s shopping Quadrado overlooking the ocean has many historical sites plus many small stores with local arts and crafts and superb dining. At night this area is transformed into one of the most magical locations in Brazil. The entire Quadrado is lit by torch and candlelight and natives and vacationers alike can be found strolling under the moon and stars, frequenting the many stores with offerings from local crafts to the latest Sao Paulo fashion designs and dining in the many excellent restaurants of the area. Later in the night the sounds of music and dance can be heard as young and old alike join in the traditional festivities of the area.
Rio GO
October 17, 20061. Copacabana Beach
You knew this already, but you’ve got to see Copacabana at least once. Cariocas and tourists from ages 2 to 92 congregate here, especially on weekends, when the Avenida Atlantica is closed to traffic. This is where you’ll find the characteristic swirling-patterned sidewalks designed by Robert Burle-Marx. Copacabana is loud, crowded, and fun, and though pickpockets are a danger, it doesn’t keep the sun-seekers away.
2. Ipanema Beach
If Rio is where the so-called “beautiful people” live, then Ipanema is where they flock to see and be seen. Just as crowded as Copacabana, Ipanema somehow feels calmer. And no one here seems interested in doing much more than getting the perfect tan. Wear your sunglasses so you can get an eyeful of the girls in their fio dental (dental floss) bikinis, and guys in their sungas (Speedos) — yes, everyone wears them.

Rio ART
October 15, 2006The Museu de Arte Moderna has a permanent exhibition of works by Brazilian artists, including Cândido Portinari, Brazil’s most famous artist.
Museu de Arte Moderna – MAM
(Museum of Modern Art)
The Museum of Modern Art, which was inaugurated in 1958, has a very unusual history. It has a privileged downtown location on Flamengo Park on Guanabara Bay. After a disastrous fire in 1978, hundreds of people from all over the world contributed to the rebuilding of this cultural treasure and the replacement of its collections.
It currently houses approximately 1700 works, including paintings, sculptures and engravings by Brazilian and foreign artists. It also houses a specialised art library and a well-known cinemathèque that is among the most popular in town.
