Visas
- If you are a US citizen, you will need to obtain a tourist visa from your local Brazilian Consulate to enter Brazil.
Allow sufficient time for applications in person or by mail.

- European Union citizens are not required to have visas to enter Brazil.
If you hold the passport of another country, please check the Brazilian visa requirements with your local Brazilian Consulate or Embassy.

- Colombian citizens do not require visa. However, Yellow Fever vaccine is required if you travel from directly from Colombia.
This certificate is mandatory if applicant traveled within the last 90 days to Colombia.

Practical Information
- Portuguese is the official language in Brazil but most people working with tourism speak good English. Spanish, Italian or French may also help you get by.
- People from Rio are called Cariocas.
- Tips are usually included as 10% service charges in restaurant bills, but you may add a little more for exceptional service, round up taxi fares and tip bellboys & chambermaids.
- Electricity outlets are 110-120 volts.
- Cell phones – may be rented through Plantel Turismo or at your hotel upon arrival.

Currency
The Brazilian monetary unit is the “Real” (R$). Currency and travelers cheques can be exchanged at the airport, your hotels and nearby banks, or for slightly better rates, at currency exchange booths or travel agencies on Ipanema’s main shopping street = Avenida Visconde de Pirajá.

1 Euro = 2.6 Brazilian Reals
1 US Dollar = 2.2 Brazilian Reals
